sunset selfie

The Sunset Selfie series directly references our contemporary fascination with instant, reinvented and created personas found in social media.  The word “Selfie”, in the title, is a critique of society’s obsession of these created personas. Some of the drawings are deliberately painted over entirely, these “black-out” drawings signify hidden, censored and obscured identities that also references my own identity. The result is seeing the former self or memory of the previous image underneath.

Some works are curated into grids. Some have a single sunset portrait that is surrounded by these obscured portraits alludes to alienation and even nods to the Jamaican “Out of Many One” national motto. The sunset image evolves into a portal or window looking out onto the sunset within the grid. The colors recall sunsets found on tourist souvenir postcards that also signifies my birthplace and periphery with it.
